JACK SHANAHAN

Guitar, Piano, Ukulele and Bass Instructor

Sam started his musical journey at a young age by participating in community youth choirs. At the age of eleven he bought his first guitar at a local pawn shop and hasn't stopped playing since. He has since found a passion for playing multiple instruments including bass, piano and ukulele.

After high school, he attended Berklee College of Music from which he graduated in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in Film Scoring. While at Berklee, Sam directed the Video Game Music Choir which performed at events such as Anime Boston and PAX East. During the summers of these years, Sam taught music at the Connecticut Multicultural Arts Summer Program for grades 3-5.

After college, Sam moved to New York City to pursue a career in music for film and television where he worked as a freelance composer for 6 years. He then began work with Brooklyn-based company, Future Proof providing eclectic scores for their one of a kind interactive film presentations. He then moved back to New England to continue writing and performing, where he also started teaching at Jacks Guitar Garage. Sam believes that everyone should have the same level of community support that helped spark his musical aspirations. When teaching, he aims to provide that to anyone who has ever wanted a new and meaningful way to express themselves.

FAVORITE TEACHING MOMENT

I love when my students teach me something. I'm always challenging them to think outside the box and to know that in music, there are always several ways to do something. Nothing makes me happier than to see a student give me a new perspective on a topic I thought I already knew. It shows that they unlocked the secrets that make learning music a creative process.
