SAWHILL

Guitar Instructor

Josh Sawhill is a versatile guitarist and music educator that has been teaching guitar for the last 10 years. Beyond teaching guitar, he also has experience in bass, ukulele, piano and percussion instruction. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts where he studied music performance and music education.

As a performing musician, Josh spent a number of years touring and releasing albums in several rock bands that have performed at venues all across the country. In recent years his musical pursuits have turned to early jazz and swing. He is a founding member of the Boston based gypsy jazz and swing band Manouche Urbain, which regularly performs throughout New England at weddings, private functions, special events and whose music has recently been part of a film soundtrack.

Along with the time Josh has spent developing his teaching skills in private instrument instruction, he worked for five years teaching group guitar, piano and drum kit lessons as part of a music outreach program that sought to bring musical instrument instruction to under-served youth in Lawrence, Massachusetts. In addition to teaching at Jack’s Guitar Garage, he is also currently the music teacher for an after school program at an elementary school in Newton where he leads group instruction for ukulele, hand percussion and digital music composition.

what inspired you into music

I've loved and felt connected to music for as long as I can remember. I have found that creating my own music and performing music with others has been a great way to connect to people in a positive and meaningful way.

FAVORITE TEACHING MOMENT

I love when one of my students shows me something they learned or figured out on their own outside of our lessons. It's great seeing that they have developed the musical skills and confidence to begin learning some of the music they love on their own.
