Abby - voice and piano student, age 12

Piano, Voice, Harp, Ukulele and Guitar Instructor

Avanah Weix recently moved to Grafton, MA and is excited to become a part of the local music community. At a very young age Avanah wanted to play the harp, but was advised to start lessons on the piano to see if she had potential as a musician. At the age of 7, she took her first piano lesson. At the age of 10 one of her piano instructors began incorporating some vocal lessons into her weekly lessons. When she was 16, she finally fulfilled her dream and started taking harp lessons. She began learning guitar by ear when she was 17 and started taking lessons when she was 18. She has studied piano, harp, and voice consistently with private instructors for the past 10 years. She also has studied Piano Performance at Indian Hill Music.

Avanah’s biggest passion is music composition. The very first song she played was a song she wrote! She loves to work with students who also have an interest in composition and has experience with helping students think creatively whether they are writing a melody, lyrics, or both!

Avanah first started teaching local children in her neighborhood when she was 16. At the age of 18, the music school where she had previously taken lessons at hired her to teach piano and voice. She loves to encourage good note and rhythm reading and also enjoys teaching ear training skills to help students to play by ear. She believes learning theory is a very important part of learning a new instrument and tries to teach it in a way that does not overwhelm the student. She enjoys the company of students of all ages and has experience teaching children as young as 4. She has a lot of experience with adult students as well.

Avanah has played in many different bands including a Pink Floyd cover band, singing in her local choir, and a few bands of her own. She enjoys performing, especially when she is playing one of her own pieces. She also enjoys teaching performance skills and exercises to help her students feel more comfortable on stage.

what inspired you into music

I would sing songs I made up at a young age.  Playing the harp was always a dream of mine.  Writing music was a healthy outlet for me during stressful times.

I get so excited for my students when they reach the point of being able to teach themselves how to play a song.  Then I know they have a fulfilling musical future ahead of them because they will be able to independently learn their favorite songs.  I also enjoy working with students that enjoy composing music.
